Child Riding a Bicycle In Critical Condition After Being Struck By SUV

January 18, 2011 - According to reports a child riding a bicycle is in critical condition after being struck by an SUV. According to Orange County Fire Authority Capt. Greg McKeown the accident occurred at approximately 7:26 a.m. when the child was riding his bike to school. The child was struck by an SUV in the vicinity of Colver Drive and Portola Parkway, according to Capt. McKeown and was trapped underneath the SUV.

The rescue crew used rescue airbags to lift the vehicle and Capt. McKeown stated he was transported to Western Medical Center in Santa Ana. According to Capt. McKeown the child is in critical condition. According to Irvine Police Department Cmdr. John Hare from the preliminary investigation the child was wearing a bicycle helmet at the time of the accident. The child has been identified as a fifth grade student at Orchard Hills School.

Tustin Unified School District spokesman Mark Eliot stated that the injuries the child sustained in the collision with the SUV are not life threatening. According to another driver the SUV stopped at a red light and then began making a turn and the child on the bicycle came into view and rode out in front of the SUV.

According to Orchard Hills School Principal Rich Montgomery the area where the child was struck by the SUV is a heavy traffic thoroughfare. Montgomery also stated there is no crossing guard at that intersection. This was a free public service message from Ehline law firm PC.
